Air-side Economizer

An air-side economizer is a type of economizer cooling system that uses outside air to cool a building or process through the HVAC system’s air-handling unit. An air-side economizer typically includes a series of dampers or vents that can be opened to bring in cool outside air and exhaust warm air from the building. The outside air is filtered and then directed into the AHU, where it is cooled by passing over the evaporator coil before being distributed to the occupied spaces.

Air-side economizers can be used in a wide range of commercial and industrial buildings and are most effective in areas with moderate climates and a significant difference between indoor and outdoor temperatures. Using air-side economizers can result in significant energy savings, as the mechanical cooling system can be turned off when the outside air is cool enough to provide sufficient cooling. In addition to reducing energy consumption, air-side economizers can also improve indoor air quality by bringing in fresh outdoor air and exhausting stale indoor air.
